Is fluoride varnish treatment recommended for adults and children?
what is a fluoride varnish?
you might want
a fluoride varnish if…
You would like to prevent, slow or reduce the spread of tooth decay!
The most prevalent oral health concern at our office is tooth decay. Common causes for tooth decay include: high sugar diets (sodas, candy), poor oral hygiene at home and cavity-causing bacteria. The result of the tooth breaking down is a cavity which needs to be treated with a filling. Fluoride varnish can not completely prevent cavities on it’s own, but is much more effective when also brushing with fluoride toothpaste, flossing regularly, staying current on dental cleanings and eating a healthy diet.
what to expect during fluoride varnish application
Applying a fluoride varnish typically involves one appointment at the office. Read on for timings and how to prepare.
A small brush is utilized to paint the varnish on the top and sides of each tooth. Initially, the varnish is sticky but hardens once it comes into contact with saliva. The varnish that hardens will be detectable by the tongue but will stay in place even if a patient tries to lick it off.
There is no pain or sensitivity during the application of varnish and takes only a few minutes to apply. You may be asked to hold your small child knee to knee with the provider when they apply the fluoride varnish.
